Sunshine and storms warmed and chilled by turns the awful quietness and solitude. Sunshine and storms warmed and chilled by turns the vast wilderness, quietness, of what is now the middle west. Yes, this is a harsh land, a harsh land. I pray that after enduring the hardships of our journey to this place, I pray that I have the strength to endure the loneliness and isolation. Still, I feel hopeful. The woods are rich with game for food; the land is rich for planting. The many trees will be cut to provide shelter. Our task won't be easy, but when has it ever been? We will survive. We will thrive. We will raise our family. We will live in peace.
